Early life

Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He spent his youth moving around Missouri with his single mother before settling in Warren, Michigan. Before divorcing, his parents, Marshall Sr. and Deborah “Debbie” Rae Nelson, were part of a group called Daddy Warbucks that performed around the Midwest, primarily at Ramada Inns.

After the divorce, Debbie and Marshall moved back and forth between Michigan and Missouri, never staying in one place for more than a year, living primarily with family members. As a child, Marshall was a loner who was frequently bullied at school. During his teenage years, they lived in a predominantly black neighborhood in Detroit.

Eminem initially dreamed of becoming a comic book artist, but that changed after hearing his first rap song, Reckless – Featuring Ice-T, from the soundtrack to the movie “Breakin’.” The album was a gift from his half-brother Ronnie.

At 14, he adopted the rap persona “M&M” (after his initials). At 17, he dropped out of high school. He worked a series of odd jobs while writing songs and participating in freestyle rap battles around the city.

Thin and shaded

Marshall eventually made a name for himself in the Detroit hip-hop scene. He joined a group called Bassmint Productions, which later changed its name to Soul Intent. While working minimum wage as a cook and dishwasher, he recorded tracks with Mashin’ Duck Records and FBT Productions. In 1996, he released his first album, “Infinite”, on a label called Web Entertainment.

Around this time, he also created his darker, more violent character known as “Slim Shady”. As Slim Shady, he addressed themes like drugs, sex, violence, and murder in his raps. In the spring of 1997, he put together “The Slim Shady EP”, which was released in stores that winter, also under Web Entertainment.

Meet Dr. Dre

In March 1998, Eminem was praised in the unsigned hype section of The Source magazine. Shortly after, he found himself kicked out of his home and decided to go to Los Angeles to compete in the Rap Olympics. He ended up landing second place, but the real victory was that an Interscope Records staffer was impressed and passed The Slim Shady EP on to CEO Jimmy Iovine.

Jimmy then played the album for Dr. Dre, who had just started his own label, Aftermath Records, and was looking for new talent. Dre then shared his initial thoughts on Eminem’s demo like this:

“I was like, what the fuck!?, and who is this? In my entire career in the music industry, I’ve never found anything on a demo or a CD. When Jimmy played that, I said, “Find him. NOW.'”

Eminem was discovered and quickly struck a deal with Aftermath Entertainment to rework and improve The Slim Shady EP, with Dre stepping in as executive producer.

The album took off immediately, both commercially and critically. It ended up being certified 4X Platinum in the United States and earned Eminem a Grammy for Best Rap Album.

His next albums were huge successes. In May 2000, he released The Marshall Mathers LP, which became the best-selling hip-hop album of all time, ultimately selling over 21 million copies. Then came 2002’s The Eminem Show, which sold more than 27 million copies.

To date, Eminem has sold over 220 million albums worldwide, making him the ninth best-selling music artist of all time, just behind legends like Pink Floyd, Rihanna, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Elvis and the Beatles.

Shady Files/50 Cent

In 1999, Eminem launched his own label under Aftermath Records, naming it Shady Records. The first group to join him was D12, a group of rappers he was close with from Detroit.

Fast forward to 2002, while filming “8 Mile,” Eminem met an underground New York rapper named 50 Cent. He had already listened to a bunch of mixtapes from the 50s and was keen to get him involved. 50 Cent ended up being the first solo artist to sign with Shady Records. That same year, the label dropped the “8 Mile” soundtrack, which ended up selling more than 11 million copies worldwide.

50 Cent’s debut album was released in February 2003 and sold 14 million copies worldwide. So far, he has sold a total of 30 million albums in his career.

Personal life

In the late 90s and early 2000s, his personal life was often laid bare in court. He had his share of conflicts with his mother and his ex-wife, Kim. Together, Eminem and Kim have a daughter named Hailie. He also has custody of Kim’s daughter from another relationship, Whitney, as well as her niece, Alaina.

Real estate

In 2000, Eminem spent $1.483 million to purchase a spacious 8,900 square foot lot in Clinton Township, Michigan, which has been his primary residence over the years.

Then, in 2003, he paid $4.8 million for a massive 15,000-square-foot mansion in Oakland County, Michigan, previously owned by the former Kmart CEO. Just a warning for visitors:

Eminem transformed the place into a high-security fortress with electric fences and guard posts guarded 24 hours a day by armed security guards. Additionally, the entire area is gated and has additional security. Funny enough, Eminem hardly spent any time there. He put it on the market in 2017 for $1.99 million and eventually sold it for $1.9 million.

Eminem’s remarkable journey from a bullied youth to one of the world’s most successful and influential artists is a testament to his talent, resilience and determination. With a net worth of $250 million, his career spans over two decades, during which he has broken records, won numerous awards, and become an iconic figure in the music industry.

Eminem’s adventures beyond music, including his successful label Shady Records, and his entrepreneurial ventures, have only solidified his legacy. Through his hard work, creative genius and business acumen, he continues to inspire millions while enjoying immense financial success.
