Canal + is on an ambitious mission targeting 50 to 100 million subscribers.
Currently, it has nearly 27 million subscribers in 52 countries on three continents.
Last December, the French media and telecommunications giant scored on the London Stock Exchange, following a spin-off from his parent company, Vivendi, inaugurating an independent future to continue its growth ambitions.
For Canal +, which generated $ 7.2 billion (around 6.4 billion euros) in 2024, Africa and Asia offer high growth potentials. In Africa, the company extends its footprint by acquiring Multichoice Group, the largest wage television company on the continent.
The South African Competition Commission has authorized the agreement worth $ 1.9 billion.
The CEO of Canal +, Maxime Saada, described the agreement “not in front major in our ambition to create a global media and entertainment company with Africa in its heart.”
Its timing is ideal for Canal +, which controls a 45% stake in Multichoice and has become more and more frustrated by the decline of the company.
Multichoice recognizes confronted the most difficult operating conditions in 40 years. At the top of the list is “a weakness of the abnormal currency”, which has reduced 7 billion rands (around 390 million dollars) of profits from its books in the last 18 months. It has also lost nearly 4 million subscribers, the total number currently at 19.3 million in 50 markets.
Canal + also plans to develop through Asia thanks to its participation in VIU based in Hong Kong. Last June, he paid $ 300 million to increase his share to 36.8% and ultimately targets 51%.
Canal + is not the only company to stir the telecommunications market. In the United States, CHARTER Communications and COX Communications CHABLODITURS have agreed to merge into an agreement worth $ 34.5 billion. And AT&T has agreed to pay $ 5.7 billion to acquire the mass fiber activities of Lumen Technologies. In India, the imminent Lelince JIO list, which is part of the Mukesh Ambani Reliance Mukesh Industries Empire, could raise $ 5.3 billion.
