Morocco: Boom In Data Centers

Morocco has exceeded South Africa as the main multitude of data centers in Africa, with 23 facilities.

The North African kingdom quickly adapted to the digital age. In 2020, the digital development agency published a roadmap listing the digital infrastructure in priority. Since then, incentives have been implemented for the sector, including tax reductions and exemptions from the National Investment Charter. The desire for data sovereignty also contributed to the boom of data centers. A law of 2021 ordered the accommodation of all sensitive data within the borders of Morocco, which led to the repatriation of the data.

Currently, most data centers belong to telecommunications companies such as Morocco Telecom and Inwi or by data centers like Medasys and N + One. Most large banks also have one, while small banks rent a data storage space.

Regional governments compete by offering different incentives. Casablanca-Settat and Rabat-Salu-Kénitra have the most data centers. The complete internet penetration rates of these urban centers and energy availability are essential for these sites. Other regions also catches up. Last year, the American company Iozera signed an agreement of $ 500 million to build a data center in Tetouan.

“The location decisions of the data center are motivated by a complex interaction of factors, including the proximity of shopping centers, regional infrastructure capacities and long -term operational sustainability. The industry naturally revolves towards the development of international affairs at N + One Dataconders.

The digital wave in Morocco does not stop in data centers. The developments in Fintech, AI and even electronic government initiatives, such as digital Morocco 2030, were recently presented during the Gitex Africa Tech Expo April 2025 in Marrakech. The event attracted more than 1,400 exhibitors and received more than 45,000 visitors and delegates from more than 130 countries.

The saying says: “Data is the new oil”. The data must also be refined and properly stored. However, unlike the oil, the data is endless and even self-reply, so that the demand for data services will continue to increase.
